2018 Election

I believe in providing the best possible educational opportunities for all students in Clarington and Ontario. We must always be working with our education partners toward that goal. We must remain focused; …equity and inclusion, special education, the safety of staff and students, achievement and well being, to name only a few. This is important work because all students are worthy and deserving of our focus and support. I commit to never forget what matters in our school system--the students.

This is about the future of our communities, our Province and our Country. As a Trustee for the past 15years, holding positions of leadership as Chair of the Kawartha Pine Ridge DSB., and currently as President of the Provincial Ontario School Boards Association, I see first hand the importance of principled, informed, experienced Trustees. I am able to provide that leadership and representation for the Municipality of Clarington.

I am very proud to be running for re-election as a Trustee for the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board.

Over the past 4 years, I have learned about the education system and about KPR, built …relationships and helped many families and community members resolve issues. I have been a strong voice for Clarington, while also advocating for the best interests of the entire board. During my term, I was pleased to serve in a leadership role and was Vice-Chairperson of the Board for two years. As a parent of two young children, I want to ensure that all students have access to the best education and opportunities that we can offer.

Anthony has been serving as a Trustee for the past two years and is currently the Board’s Vice-Chairperson and Chairperson of the Budget Committee. Anthony has become fully immersed in the role, actively …participating on several committees, attending parent conferences and completing professional development modules related to the role of a Trustee.

Anthony supports continued efforts to improve mental health services across KPR and is a tremendous advocate for equity and diversity at our schools so that all students feel welcomed and supported.

Anthony is a proud husband and father to three boys who attend KPR schools. He has lived in Cobourg with his family for the past five years and have become fully immersed in the community, enjoying the high quality of life that Northumberland offers. Professionally,

Anthony brings with him over 10 years of urban planning and policy expertise, having worked in the private sector, in Provincial Government and currently with the Regional Municipality of Durham. Anthony has a Bachelor of Environmental Science in Geography, from the University of Waterloo and a Master of Science in Urban Planning & Management, from Aalborg University, Denmark.

Anthony is honoured to serve his community at the KPR Board and looks forward to continue and advocate for all students.

After sixteen years as Trustee I would like to see our Board become much more active in making suggestions toward "raising the bar" of quality in education rather than dealing mainly with budgetary matters (dollars which they simply assign by whatever is allotted by the Ministry) and altering bus stops, etc.

Perhaps, if Trusteeship was unpaid it would get a more educationally-dedicated and business-experienced group of candidates who, from business and social experience, would put more pressure on both Ministry and unions to perform their respective roles.

There are high school situations that need attention and resolution but have had no serious and creative discussion. The board seems more able to close a school rather than fix it.

Consequently - My "platform" is to concentrate on two serious issues.

1) - To create an understanding by the board of the failure of the Ministry to drive ahead on curriculum to suit today;s student needs. Boards should be more demanding of educational up- grade and less bemoaning of financial and bureaucratic complaints. EQAO might be slightly modified in the early grades but not eliminated as some boards and teachers have wished.

2) - To do everything in my power to reverse the enrollment decline in an important (and only) high school in one of our towns. The services of a Separate School presents an unequal and unfair pressure on that school and should be disallowed, in my opinion. I was successful in converting one high school into a top facility and will attempt to do the same again. More

I believe in the power of Public Education and that it isthe bridge that brings schools and communities together; where one can learn from the other by the development of new programs and skills that can …benefit both parties. I believe in advocating for our student body with special needs. It is imperative that we continue the focus on mental health and health living to provide youth with the told they need to feel that they are valued, that they belong and that we care enough to provide them with the supports they need to become productive individuals. I have been a Trustee for the past 8 years serving as Program Chair and currently sit on the Ontario Public School Board's Program Work Committee. I am running because there is more work to do in public education and I want to continue to be a part of the story. More

My name is Wayne Bonner and I’m running for re-election as Public School Board Trustee in Peterborough. I’m proud of what we have accomplished during my first term as Trustee and there is much more that …can be done to ensure that we provide the best educational experience for our children that we possibly can.

My four years experience as a Trustee is supported by the previous 25 years that I spent in the post-secondary education sector both in the classroom as well as in positions of administration. Prior to my time in the education field I spent 14 years in the private sector in managerial positions with several companies in Ontario. This experiential base makes me an excellent candidate for Trustee.

I am a committed advocate for a strong and vital Public Education System. It has often been said that “our children are our future” and if one believes that, then there is no greater gift that we can give them than the best education we are able to provide. Our schools and our teachers face challenges today in providing that education like no other time in our history. The world around us continues to change at an ever increasing pace and we must strive to ensure that our education system rises to meet those challenges.

As a Trustee, I work with my colleagues and Board staff to make the best decisions to support our students. That Trustee role includes providing strategic direction for our Board, implementing policy that allows that strategic direction to be realized, and to manage and monitor a budget of more than $400 million to ensure that we make the best choices. In addition, Trustees become that local advocate for our constituents. Over the past four years I have had the privilege of working with dozens of families in helping them access the resources and services that their children needed. Working to ensure that all students can access their education in a fair and equitable manner.

I also believe that Trustees must be prepared to engage with our Provincial Government in dialog and to advocate for Public Education. Trustees are the only elected representatives in our Province whose sole focus is our children and their education and they provide that local voice to represent you.

I am a retired educator, community volunteer, father, grandfather and dedicated advocate for learners.

I've worked at both the Peel Board and the KPR Board, so have seen education from the inside …in two different communities. A healthy Board of Trustees should include many different perspectives and have members from all walks of life, but it should not exclude those who have an intimate understanding of education itself.

I have worked as the Arts Consultant for the KPR Board (six years) so I've seen how our Board works from the inside. I know its structure and personalities. I've been on the Equity and Diversity Committee and worked hard on the First Nation, Metis and Inuit policy roll-out. I managed the subject council meetings for all of the secondary schools, so learned about the range of issues that concern teachers around the Board. I've taught additional qualification courses in Drama to many teachers in the elementary panel, and learned how hard they work and what stresses they face day-to-day. I've been Head of the Peterborough Regional Integrated Arts program. I've learned a great deal about the politics and the community impact of Board decisions. I've been President of the Council of Ontario Drama and Dance Educators (CODE) and a writer of Ontario curriculum and resources for the Ministry of Education. I've been Treasurer of the International Drama Educators Congress (IDEA) Canada, so have seen education in Ontario through the eyes of international guests. I've been a presenter throughout the province for OSSTF training workshops in support of teachers interested in ending gender violence and supporting the LGBTQ students throughout the province, and also supporting students with special needs. I've been on committees for the provincial OSSTF, so have seen a bit of that union from the inside. I've been the President of the Theatre Guild and managed / Chaired monthly Board meetings there, learning the processes required for effective action to be taken within the confines of Board processes. I am a father and grandfather, and my children have gone through the school system. They, more than anyone, have taught me the importance of effective, humane, supportive and challenging schools. More
