Kate Baggott is seeking election to the Board of Trustees for the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN). If elected, she would be one of four trustees to represent the cities of St.Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake. …Kate is an author and research consultant who has studied child & youth interactions with technology since 1996. She is a volunteer with Out of the Cold and is a past board member of the Garden City Food Co-op and Eva's Initiatives for Homeless Youth. A mother of two students at DSBN elementary and high schools, she also holds a BA from the University of Toronto and an MFA from the University of British Columbia. More

Alex has spent his life advocating for students and families. As a teacher and a principal, he inspired our next generation. He has spent countless hours fighting for students with special needs, workplace safety and the needs of all students and their families. Alex can truly say he understands every aspect of our education system. As a trustee, he will continue to communicate with families and the school board to best meet the needs of the District School Board of Niagara students in St. Catharines & Niagara-on-the-Lake.

As a teacher from Junior Kindergarden to Grade 8, Alex served on Curriculum Writing Teams, and as a Primary Resource Teacher. He has Ministry of Education Specialist Certificates in Primary Education and Elementary Music. Alex Graduated Brock University with Honour Degrees in History and Political Science. He Graduated Niagara University in Lewiston, New York, with a Master of Science Degree in Education. Alex also holds Ministry of Education Principal Qualifications in Administration and Supervision.

Alex has spent the last eight years sitting on the District School Board of Niagara’s PIC Committee (Parent Involvement Committee) as a former Trustee and now as a Community Representative. He continues to work hard to help parents become involved in their child’s education.

Married to Alice (Dyck) Bradnam who grew up on Creek Road in N.O.T.L. and attended Col. John Butler P.S. and Eden S.S. Alex has many ties with the Niagara-On-The Lake community where his family attends church. He has previously owned property in the Town and has helped coach youth soccer in NOTL. Alex is a strong supporter of St. Davids and Crossroads Public Schools. He has worked with groups in the town to preserve schools and education.

As a former DSBN Trustee, Alex has served on countless committees such as Policy Advisory, SEAC (Special Education Advisory Council), Finance, Student/Trustee Senate, Student Discipline, Program and Planning, Supervised Alternative Learning, etc...

Alex can honestly say that he has sat on all sides of the education table as a Parent, Teacher, Administrator, Federation President, and School Board Trustee. He knows the system, the people who work for it, and the communities that are served by the DSBN. More

David Israelson has lived in Niagara Region for nine years. Trained as a lawyer and still a member of the Ontario bar, he has worked for most of his career as a journalist, author and communications advisor.

David’s …career includes long experience at the Toronto Star, where he was an editorial writer, foreign correspondent, environment and housing reporter and business reporter.

He served for more than a year as senior writer for the Office of the Premier and was a partner in one of Canada’s most important public relations agencies before moving to Niagara and working independently as a freelancer.

David has written two books and contributes frequently to the Globe and Mail and other national and international publications. He provides strategic consulting to business clients and has taught communications in Canada, the Middle East and Africa.

David, his wife and three grown children are all proud to have been educated in Ontario public schools He hopes to be elected as DSBN school trustee because he believes we can do better.

We can do better than closing schools, busing too many students and ignoring communities.

We can do better in supporting student achievement, special education and learning strategies.

It is time for change in Niagara. We can do better.

David Waddington has worked in the Post-Secondary sector for the past 15 years. During that time he has built and delivered transition programs to help students adjust to post-secondary life. In addition, …he has worked with employers and members of the community to help provide students with real-world experiences to help students solidify their in-class learning.

David's motivation for running for Trustee is to help strengthen the relationships between our schools and communities. To do this, David is committed to empowering families to support learning outside of the classroom and to build partnerships with local businesses in order to expose our children to a host of career paths. This would result in a more informed student transitioning to post-secondary education and a stronger community. More

My name is Elizabeth Klassen and I am campaigning for a position as Trustee of the DSBN english speaking public schools for the Town of Lincoln/Grimsby. My children only attended and graduated from the …DSBN Schools and as a parent I was a 15 year member of the Parent Council and 13 of those years I was the Chair. I have volunteered for many years at our single fundraiser “Artfest” as well as many subcommittees such as the Constitution Committee where I we completed our Parent Council Constitution as mandated by the Province. Volunteering has always been important to me and representing our community to the staff/educators has been my mandate as a volunteer. I have worked for many years building relationships with community members and staff to work together for students in our school community.

As Trustee, I plan to do the same for my community. I want to be the voice that the community needs to work with staff regarding concerns of our community. I feel that change is needed to keep ideas fresh, new and innovative. Thank you for considering me for your vote on October 22, 2018. More

Dale is seeking your support for re-election as your trustee for Pelham and Thorold. Dale is a graduate of Brock University earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters in Education degree. A former elementary …principal and teacher, Dale’s experience enables her to make decisions that ensure all of our students have the best possible educational opportunities. Dale has been Chair and Vice-Chair of the District School Board of Niagara for seven of the last eight years.

As a community advocate, Dale has chaired the Thorold Active Transportation Advisory Committee, the Thorold Murals Committee, the Welland Canals Parkway: Thorold Task Group and has served as a director of the Thorold Community Activities Group and Village Bible Church. Her volunteer work includes supporting students at Prince of Wales School and Thorold Secondary School as well as the Canadian Cancer Society and the Diabetes Association, Thorold Minor Baseball and the Thorold Community Theatre. Dale has also received the Ontario Heritage Trust Recognition Award and the Thorold Volunteer recognition Award.

Highlights of the work accomplished by the District School Board of Niagara while I have been your Trustee:

-A balanced budget with a $2,000,000. surplus

-Five new schools built: Crossroads Public School, Harriet Tubman Public School, Twenty Valley Public School, John Brant Public School and Greater Fort Erie Secondary School. A second new high school is underway for Lincoln.

-Major additions and renovations have taken place at Governor Simcoe, Laura Secord and Sir Winston Churchill Secondary Schools as well as Oakridge and Wellington Heights Public Schools.

-Completion of the Walker Living Campus at Woodend and the Outdoor Education Adventure campus at St. Johns.

-New turf fields at A N Myer, Sir Winston Churchill, Governor Simcoe Secondary School, Welland Centennial and Greater Fort Erie Secondary School. Three more are under construction at E L Crossley, Westlane and Port Colborne High.

-Mechanical upgrades at Welland Centennial, Stamford Collegiate, Eden and Welland Centennial. Significant work has also been completed at Central, Dalewood and Glynn A. Green Public Schools.

-Three major additions are in the planning stages: an eight room addition at Forestview, four kindergarten classes at Richmond Street School and a child care addition at Oakridge.

-The DSBN Academy has had two graduating classes in 2017 and 2018 with all students prepared for post-secondary education.

-Student support workers increased for 2018 -19 include a Mental Health Lead, an additional psychologist, seven additional social workers, three ABA facilitators, 8 Designated Early Childhood Educators, 114 new elementary teachers and 64 new secondary teachers, 30 Early Childhood workers.

EQAO Results: Our students continue make significant improvements in EQAO results: The DSBN is among the top four boards in the province of Ontario in 2018.

-84% of our grade three students met or exceeded the provincial standard in reading, 9% above the provincial average.

-83% of our grade three students met or exceeded the provincial standard in writing, 11% above the provincial average.

-76% of our grade three students met or exceeded the provincial average, in math, 15% above the province.

-85% of our grade six students met or exceeded the provincial standard in reading, 5% above the provincial average.

. 84% of our grade three students met or exceeded the provincial standard in writing, 4% above the provincial average.

-61% of our grade six students met or exceeded the provincial average in math, 12% above provincial results

-84% of our grade six students met or exceeded the provincial average in writing, 4% above the province

Our Youth are 20% of the population and 100% of the future. It is our responsibility to set them up for success. To that end I have been actively involved in the Elementary and Secondary school councils …for over 5 years and a member of the Parent Involvement Committee for over 2 years. Additionally I sit on several other Boards and Committees which will complement the role of Trustee as the link between the school and community. I am committed to improving communication and collaboration in order that we may better shape policies that are reflective of our partnerships and that are keeping up to the inevitable changes that occur throughout our communities.

I have four children (ages 15,14,9,8) of which two are special needs. This is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of a team in advocating for improved learning and well being for ALL students, especially since our students' EQAO scores are well below both the Provincial average and that of the DSBN. More
