    Sylvia MARTIN
    About Me:

I am a long time resident of River Ward. I decided to enter the 2014 municipal election after talking to the moms and dads who wait with their children for the school bus when in conversation over a concern they said they had no idea who their Trustee was. Past: I taught grade 8 art and Canadian History back in the 80s. At University I was a TA in my grad year. I’ve taught art in the adult education program in the 90s. Currently: now that I have been retired, I give workshops (gratis) on using art as an alternative means to pharmaceutical based pain management. I am a life student enrolled in online university courses and MOOC (Massive Online Open Courses). My degree is from York University (Toronto), a certificate from Algonquin College (PMF). Cert. Auto-Cad (St. Lawrence College), Film History (Queen’s University, Kingston). I am quite versed in Rules of Order from years on Councils, Board of Governors, Non-Profit Organizations, Communications and Liaison (DFAIT-Security Clearance) and my ongoing work with Ottawa Police Services as an ally with the GLBT Liaison Committee. River Ward is a very large Ward made up of many cultural and economically diverse communities. I have the love of my community, my compassion for education, and a respect for the people I want to be representing. I feel my community deserves more from their Trustee. I will promise this: My self, Jeff and Shirley are very passionate about education. I live in this ward; I feel I understand it better than the other candidates. I believe the community has a very difficult decision to make as we all have skills sets “to bring to the table”. Whatever the outcome, I intend to stay involved, and will offer my time and energies to either incumbent Shirley is re-elected or to Jeff If he is elected. More

  • Image of Daniel NUGENT
    Daniel NUGENT
    About Me:

Who am I? I am Daniel Nugent candidate for Trustee, Ottawa Carlton District School Board, Zone 10. I was born and raised in Ottawa, I am a lawyer and I have been practicing law for the past 9 years. I am the father of a small child enrolled in the OCDSB. I am myself a product of the OCDSB system and I support the school board. What is a School Board Trustee? A trustee is a locally elected member of the public who acts as advocate for public education. By law trustees are required to consult with parents, students and community supporters of the board. Trustees are responsible for establishing police direction for their school board. The Ottawa Carlton District School Board has approximately 71 thousand students and an annual budget of 859 million dollars. Governing this institution is an important job and therefore trustees are important community leaders. Why would I make a good Trustee? If and when elected I shall ensure a strong public education system BY i. promoting accountability throughout the school board; ii. establishing a respectful, caring and professional climate in our schools; and iii. working closely with parent councils to promote community involvement in public education. I have been speaking with and listening to parents in zone 10 over the past few months and I continue to be amazed at the variety of initiatives parents are voluntarily undertaking to improve the quality of public education for their children and other students. For example many parent councils fundraise for things like musical instruments for school orchestras, uniforms and athletic equipment, extra books for school libraries and even petty cash so teachers don’t have to pay out of pocket for arts and craft supplies. I believe that moving forward parent counsels can and should be given greater opportunity to contribute their concerns and suggestions with respect to school board policy directives. I look forward to working closely with parent counsels and other community groups with a view to promoting public education for all 71 thousand students in the OCDSB system. Conclusion: Please remember to vote on Oct 27, 2014, and visit my campaign website at: https://www.facebook.com/votedanielnugent More
