    About Me:

I was a teacher in Trillium Lakelands for 22 years, just retired this year. I have always been a strong advocate for students, especially those with special needs. My goals as a trustee would be to improve student and parent engagement with their schools; to improve mental health supports for students and staff; to ensure the provincial tutoring money is spent in ways that support students in rural settings. About Me:

“Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely.” (Franklin D. Roosevelt).

An open, free and accessible high-quality public education safeguards our great democratic freedoms and opportunities. During the pandemic crisis, confidence in education and in authority was challenged. Schools closed with very little notice and left families scrambling. The introduction of hybrid models of education were fast tracked. Many students fell behind and became discouraged. Families felt betrayed.

The pandemic crisis also forced us to identify and correct weaknesses in our system so we can move forward with strength and purpose. We now have a unique opportunity to “seize the day” and escalate the improvements we need to secure our future.

As your trustee, I will actively listen to the ideas and concerns of all my constituents, collaborate with all stakeholders, and mediate solutions that work for all. I will ensure your voice is respected, listened to, understood and appropriately responded to.

We all need support in our educational journeys, especially when life throws us a curve ball. I will foster excellence and resiliency in an education system that meets our community’s needs for support in an often unpredictable world.

Please vote for Wards 6 & 8 TLDSB Trustee candidate Joan Abernethy to promote excellence, progress and resiliency in education.

    About Me:

I began working at the TLDSB in 2006 teaching elementary school. In 2012, I moved to the secondary panel where I became a department head. In 2018 I was presented with an opportunity to work for a non-profit organization called ICTC where I worked with students and teachers from across Canada with a focus on building students' digital skills. This was a federally funded program which was aimed at preparing students for the workforce of tomorrow by encouraging them to participate in the Digital Economy. In 2020, I was hired by a software company called DigitalEd which is where I am currently employed.

I am running for TLDSB trustee because I have a passion for the education sector and want to continue contributing to the growth and improvement of our school board. I have two daughters who are currently in elementary school at TLSDB.

I believe that having worked as a teacher and in the private sector I can bring a unique perspective to the TRUSTEE table.

    About Me:

I just retired from teaching. In my last 5 years at TLDSB I travelled around supporting staff and students - specifically for our neurodiverse population.

This experience gave me a unique view of many different schools. I was not on staff, I was there to help, and had to quickly establish working relationships with staff, students and families.

A vote for me is a vote for a strong advocate. I advocate for family involvement, for student wellness and for transparency in TLDSB policy and decision making. I am excited to be running and look forward to the opportunity to bring your voice to TLDSB.
